Rule #1: Always trim your wick before lighting or re-lighting a candle, 1/4” is generally acceptable. This ensures the candle flame is the proper size every time, lengthening the burn time of your candle.
Rule #2: Always let your candle burn long enough to melt the wax pool all the way to the edges. This alone can prevent “Candle Tunneling” (When the sides of your candle do not melt, resulting in a wax wall that is higher than your wick). This is bad for the performance of your candle.
Rule #3: Never let a candle burn for too long. A general rule of thumb is no longer than 4 hours. You can tell when it’s been lit too long when all of the candle wax is liquid, the wick is longer and producing a larger flame than usual, or it’s producing smoke. This is dangerous as the jars will overheat and can cause injury if they were to break from excessive heat.
